Suspect arrested after standoff in Winston-Salem
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Authorities said a Winston-Salem man was arrested and charged after a brief standoff with police.
Daniel Earnest Akers faces charges of first degree kidnapping, misdemeanor child abuse, assault on an officer and assault on a female.
Winston-Salem police said they were called to a home at 78 Northwoods Circle around 9 p.m. Friday in response to an assault on a female report.
Police said they found a woman with minor injuries when they arrived. The woman said she shared the home with her boyfriend and her 3-year-old daughter.
Police said Akers pointed a weapon that appeared to be a rifle in the direction of the officers.
A standoff ensued in which Akers held the 3-year-old hostage, according to police. Police said the woman was evacuated and the S.W.A.T. team was called.
The child was eventually released unharmed after a brief standoff, police said.
The suspect was arrested and charged. No injuries were reported. Police said several firearms were seized.
The suspect was placed in the Forsyth County Jail under a $115,000 secured bond and has court planned for March 6.
Officer L. Castellano has been placed on Administrative Duty while the investigation is completed.
