SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Due to increased power outages in Surry County, a Red Cross shelter will open at the Franklin Community VFD in Mount Airy.

The shelter is located at 2136 Hwy. 89, Mt. Airy in Surry County.

The shelter will be open until there is no longer a need for it for people without power or stranded on highways around the area.

Stranded motorists should call 911 and request Surry County provide assistance with transportation or a tow back on the road. Any families without power should bring personal bedding, pillows, toiletries and life sustaining medications to the shelter.

If you have small children, infants or toddlers, bring necessary supplies such as diapers, wipes, bottles, powdered milk and baby food with you — the shelter suggests bringing enough to last 24 to 48 hours.
