ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Officials are keeping an eye on Dan River after a coal ash spill from a storm water pipe this week.

Officials with the State Department of Environment and Natural Resources were in Rockingham County Monday monitoring the water quality.

They aren’t sure yet how the water quality may be affected by the spill.

The Environmental Protection Agency has been notified about the issue.

An investigation is ongoing.

This was at the Dan River site in Eden, NC not the facility at Belews Lake. Duke Energy is working with the State Department of Environment and Natural Resources to monitor water quality and work on a short-term solution and the long-term repair.

I live in Danville downstream of the spill. The river runs grey right now when it should be showing a muddy color from recent rains… can not be just a small spill. Time or the EPA, Duke Power and the City of Danville to tell us the truth! All you have to do is look at the difference in water color where the Sandy River joins the Dan. Very Sad that again a large company has put its profits over doing the proper thing. Very sad………
