Grenade found in Winston-Salem Goodwill collection box

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police responded to a Goodwill store Thursday morning in response to a hand grenade being discovered in a collection box by employees.

Officers responded to the Goodwill at 528 Waughtown Street shortly after 9 a.m. on a reported found property. Upon arrival, Goodwill management personnel said a grenade had been found in one of their collection boxes approximately a week ago.

Management said they could not provide any further information as to where the item came from.

Personnel with the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit responded and secured the device to the department’s hazardous device disposal area where it was determined the grenade was live and potentially hazardous.

The grenade was detonated and rendered safe.
