XI’AN, China — A 4-year-old boy in China found his parents’ life savings under their bed and ripped it to shreds.

The Daily Mail reported that it happened after the boy’s 28-year-old mother left him alone in her bedroom at their home in Xi’an, Shaanxi province.

The boy reportedly found what would be about $5,000 in U.S. currency in a box under their bed and ripped it apart while his parents were in another room.

The parents reportedly let the child rip up old books because they said they were easy to replace.

The family said they had been saving for a deposit on a new apartment, which they planned to buy in the New Year.

They said they were fortunate enough to find a bank that would match the value of the notes and exchange them for new ones.
