RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. -- A Randolph County couple is expected to appear in court today after being charged in the accidental shooting of a three-year-old.

William Monroe Simmons, 27, and his girlfriend, Melisa Ann Mumpower, 26, are facing three counts of misdemeanor child abuse, one count of felony child abuse and one count of failure to properly store a firearm to protect minor.

In November, Simmons' three-year-old daughter Kimmie was shot by another three-year-old using a gun that had been left out.

Mumpower told deputies she was cleaning when she heard a gunshot. When she entered the room where the children were playing, she found Kimmie suffering from a gunshot wound.

The child was treated and released from the hospital last week.
