Appalachian State University unveils new/old logo
BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University says it’s scrapping its “Yosef Head” logo introduced in 1999 and is going back to its old “Victory Yosef” logo, according to WTVD.
The logo features a bearded man smoking a corncob pipe.
In a news release posted on its athletics website, the school said it’s making the change after a great response from students.
“The excitement that Victory Yosef has generated among our students, alumni and fans since we introduced it as a throwback logo last fall has been overwhelming,” Appalachian State director of athletics Charlie Cobb said. “Due to its popularity, it only made sense to make Victory Yosef a permanent part of our branding. We hope that it endures as a recognizable mark of Appalachian athletics for years to come.”
While the school says it’s excited, the change has drawn a mixed reaction elsewhere.
It was reported by WTVD, that CBS writer Matt Norlander is saying the new logo looks like a “modern-day Brooklyn hipster.”
Websites like Deadspin.com have mockingly suggested it was drawn by a child.
But App State fans disagree, saying the old logo fits better with the Mountaineers tradition and history.
According to Wikipedia, “the name Yosef comes from mountain talk for “yourself”, the idea being that if you are a fan, friend or alumnus and have a heart of black and gold, you are Yosef.”
“Traditional logos with strong mascots are hot in the market right now and we are excited that Appalachian State has chosen to permanently introduce the Victory Yosef logo to its official logo library,” said Lewis Hardy, president and CEO of Licensing Resource Group, Appalachian State’s licensing management partner. “The Victory Yosef logo has stood the test of time and will remain very popular in the marketplace going forward.”
