GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Handgun permits can now be applied and paid for online, the sheriff’s office announced on Friday.

Under the previous system, Guilford County citizens were required to go to one of the district offices and complete an application, then return about one week later to pick up the permit if approved.

The new online system will allow citizens to submit their application and pay the fee with a credit or debit card from anywhere with Internet access.

“Even though you can still apply at any of our locations in person, we hope the new system will give the citizens a more simple and flexible way to help speed the process up and be a convenience for the citizens of Guilford County,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Pistol permits by North Carolina law are $5 for each permit issued. The online application will cost an addition $3 for a convenience fee and there may also be a small transaction fee of less than $1, according to the sheriff’s office.

To access the system, just go to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office website and follow the prompts to pistol permits.
