Man arrested for murder of grandfather, assault of mother

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — A man is in custody following an assault that resulted in the death of an elderly man and serious injury of his daughter on Nov. 5.

Jeff David Steen, 40, of Albemarle, was charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon on Thursday.

Steen is the son of the assault victim, Sandra Steen, 62, and the grandson of the murder victim, J.D. Furr, 87.

Steen was the person who contacted police and EMS on the morning of Nov. 6 to report the incident. As investigators worked to solve the case, evidence collected and facts uncovered continued to lead them to Steen as the primary suspect.

Steen was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center with no bond and has court planned for Friday.

Sandra Steen continues to recover and is undergoing rehabilitation due to injuries suffered in the assault.
