John Edwards starting a new Raleigh law firm

RALEIGH — Former U.S. senator and presidential candidate, whose political career was derailed by a sex scandal that transfixed the nation, is returning to the public spotlight by opening a law firm in Raleigh.

According to the News & Observer, Edwards will join his former law partner, prominent trial lawyer David Kirby, and his daughter Cate Edwards, to form the law firm Edwards Kirby.

The firm will have offices in Raleigh and Washington, D.C.

Edwards was a well-known lawyer before his successful U.S. Senate campaign in 1998.

According to the trade journal Lawyer’s Weekly, Edwards previously won at least $152.4 million for his clients

This is Edwards’ first time getting back into the public after he was acquitted on a campaign finance abuse charge.

Edwards said on Monday that he has no plans to seek office again.
