WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-- The best way to prevent or slow aging in your skin is simple says Winston-Salem Dermatologist Dr. Lauren Gandhi, stay out of the sun.
FOX8 talked with Dr. Gandhi about three common skin issues associated with aging, wrinkles, age spots and skin cancer.
Dr. Gandhi said the number one way to prevent them all is protecting yourself from the sun, no matter how old or young you are or the time of year.
"The sun can change your skin and can actually cause change in your moles that are otherwise normal," said Gandhi. Gandhi recommends using sunscreen daily and all year round.
As for a spot you may fear is skin cancer, "If you have a changing lesion that is bleeding or growing or just looks different from the others on your body please have it checked out."
Dr. Gandhi also said age spots can be made more noticeable by the sun, most of those slight differences in skin color are not to worry about and can be bleached or taken care of by your dermatologist.
If you have wrinkles or skin spots you are worried about, while some creams and moisturizers can be a temporary fix, Gandhi said, "It's always best to talk with your dermatologist before using any cream or trying a medical procedure. While there are some good procedures out there, you want to make sure you're getting the one that will give you the results you desire."
