ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A coin toss, not a recount, was what determined the outcome of the town council race in Stoneville.

There was a tie between Bill Farris and Jerry Smith for one of the five council seats available.

Both received 144 votes, and a recount showed it wasn’t a mistake.

So they flipped a coin, which is allowed by law.

Farris won the coin toss — and the town council seat.
