Family of Fayetteville Navy Yard shooting victim suing
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The family of a Washington Navy Yard shooting victim and Fayetteville native plans to file a $37.5 million lawsuit against the federal government today, citing negligence in the September massacre that left 12 dead and wounded four others.
According to WTVD, Justin Givens, a Florida-based attorney, said Mary D. Knight’s family will make the announcement and file suit Friday in Tampa where Knight used to live.
The attorney say the shooter Aaron Alexis, 34, had a well-documented criminal and mental health record that the Veterans Administration chose to ignore after visits to the facility earlier in the year.
Knight, 51, was working as an IT specialist in the Navy Yard when she was killed.
