ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- A family in Rowan County is thankful two Kannapolis police officers stepped in to help after they lost their home and two dogs in a house fire.

According to WSOC, when one of the officers heard of the family who lost everything in a house fire on Sept. 30, he wanted to help.

The Pollard family made it out safely, thanks to 8-year-old Zane, who was the first to smell smoke and alert the family.

They lost everything, including their two pit boxers named Pumpkin and Bessie.

When Leanne Pollard shared their story with a bank teller, word spread and a police officer in Kannapolis stepped forward to help.

Justin Scarborough knew Officer Kiser had a litter of puppies he was trying to get rid of, so the two met with the family and gave them Thumper, a full blooded American bulldog.

It's a gift the family fell in love with. They say they will always be thankful for the two officers who thought of them in their time of sorrow.
