Fire damages downtown Durham shops

DURHAM, N.C. — Flames ripped through several shops and apartments in downtown Durham overnight.

WTVD reported the fire started just after 1 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of East Chapel Hill Street in the Five Points area.

It took firefighters awhile to extinguish the blaze as it spread through The Bicycle Chain, The Cupcake Bar, Pizzeria Toro and three apartments that were in the same century-old Morris building, according to officials.

Five residents in the apartments were evacuated, but no one was injured.

The cause of the blaze has not been determined.

Authorities are still investigating at this time.
