EDEN, N.C. — A woman has been charged after she  ran a red light and hit a moped Tuesday, killing a man.

According to N.C. State High way troopers, Emily Smith, 39, was traveling west on U.S. 311 around 2:50 p.m. when she ran a red light at the intersection of U.S. 311 and N.C. 87 in Eden.

Smith hit a moped that was being driven by Bobby Ray Church, 59, who died from the impact.

Troopers have charged Smith with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Trooper Danny Burgess says he does not believe alcohol was a factor, but does think she was distracted.

There is no evidence at this time that shows Smith was texting or on the phone, but Burgess says he believes she was distracted because she crossed into the intersection while going the speed limit of 55 mph.

The investigation is ongoing.
