LEICESTER, N.C. – Buncombe County deputies shot and killed a man after authorities said he fired a hunting bow at them.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported that the incident happened as deputies were trying to serve a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender.
Authorities said the sex offender ran at deputies, fired a hunting bow at close range and was shot and killed when deputies returned fire.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday at the sex offender’s residence on Elkins Road in Leicester, according to deputies.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said he was a registered sex offender in California and Washington State.
The deputies involved were not injured but were placed on paid leave during a State Bureau of Investigation inquiry, which is standard procedure.
Neighbors said they were aware of his criminal history, and one neighbor said a bail bondsman came to the neighborhood looking for him on several occasions.
