SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — Surry County deputies said the partial human remains found in the Flat Rock community in April have been linked to a man missing since 2009.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said the remains were found on April 12, 2013 by a hunter in a wooded area of South Parkview Trail.

The remains were confirmed as those of Joseph Carl Pike, who was 35 when he was last seen at his residence at 203 Badgett Ave., Mount Airy, on June 25, 2009, deputies said. His brother reported him missing on July 6 of that year.

Several agencies aided the sheriff’s office in a grid search of the area and cadaver dogs were also used but no additional remains were found, deputies said.

The bone fragment was sent to the University of North Texas for identification. Medical records and a DNA sample were also provided.

The investigation into Pike’s death is continuing.
