Morehead City police officer shot in training exercise

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — A Morehead City police officer is in a medically induced coma after one of his fellow officers accidentally shot him during a training exercise on Thursday.

According to Carolina Coast Online, Garrett Hardin, 23, received a bullet wound to the chest during a training exercise being conducted in the rear parking lot of the police department.

Hardin was not wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time and the bullet punctured his lung. He was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center, where he in a medically induced coma, according to WNCT.

It’s unknown what penalties or charges, if any, the officer who shot the gun may be facing.

The SBI is investigating.
