Man shot while sitting in vehicle, critically injured

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A man suffered life-threatening injuries after he was shot while sitting in his vehicle on Monday night, police said in a news release.

Officers responded to a report of a man with a gun around 8:20 p.m. Monday.

According to police, Dejuan Jerrell Austin, 23, was shot in the chest near Kentucky Ave. and Maryland Ave.

Austin was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center Austin for treatment. He is currently listed in critical condition.

Police said Timothy Ausco Hedgepeth, 29, of Kernersville, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle.

The investigation is ongoing.
