ASHEVILLE, N.C. – An Asheville police officer shot and killed a former Asheville high school football star involved in a break-in, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Authorities said former Asheville high school football star 19-year-old A.J. Marion was fatally shot Sunday morning after police said he was involved in a break-in and fired a gun as he was being chased by officers.

Officials said the shooting happened after police responded to a burglary call around 7:30 a.m. at an unoccupied home.

Police said officers responding to a burglary call chased the suspect. They said officers saw the suspect had a gun, and when they confronted him, he refused to comply with commands from police and was shot.

The investigation is ongoing and the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.

Marion led Reynolds High School to the 2009 state championship.

Police didn’t shoot and kill a former high school football star, the police shot and killed a criminal in the act burglary, evading arrest and discharging a weapon.

He couldn’t have been much of a high school student if he excelled in football but resorted to being a common thief at 19.
