DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — The county will fund an estimated $98,000 stairwell renovation project at Boone’s Cave Park, which will include a new observation landing that overlooks the Yadkin River, The Lexington Dispatch reports.

The Davidson County Board of Commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday to accept a bid from Hedrick Creative Building, LLC, of Lexington, to build the new stairwell.

Support services director Dwayne Childress said the current stairwell, which dates back to the 1980s, is in disrepair. He said the county’s inspections department also informed park officials that the stairwell was not up to current code.

The current stairwell spans from the park’s picnic area down to the mouth of the cave. The new stairwell will begin and end near the same locations, it will take a new route.

The new structure will be wider and include a 16 foot by 28 foot observation landing, according to county documents.
