James Thomas Smith, 47, of Wadesboro

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — An Anson County man accused of killing his former girlfriend and another man has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

WBTV reported that James Thomas Smith, 47, of Wadesboro, was arrested in the deaths of 49-year-old Daisy Coleman Melton and 58-year-old Larry Thomas Lindsey.

Deputies said the victims were found after the incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. Sunday at a home on Gin Lane in the Morven area.

Melton was found stabbed to death outside the home and Lindsey was found shot to death inside a bedroom.

Deputies said the murders appear to be the result of a domestic violence situation. Smith was apparently a former boyfriend of Melton.

Sheriff’s records show deputies had been called to the home for several domestic incidents between the two. Smith was removed from the residence in August.

Court records also show Smith was sentenced to 15 years in 1992 for a second-degree murder conviction in the death of his wife in Wadesboro. He was released in 1997.

Authorities said Smith was placed in the Anson County Jail under no bond.
