WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- When it comes to retail it's no secret stores overlap the seasons these days instead of waiting till one ends to start preparing for another, but what they are also starting earlier than ever is seasonal hiring.

Kohl's announced Thursday it is now hiring more than 50,000 seasonal employees nationwide. Target, Macy's, FedEx, and many more companies are also already hiring.

At Target on University Parkway in Winston-Salem, Store Team Leader Brittani Law said, "we're primarily looking for cashiers and sales team floor members.  We do a lot of part-time work as well as some full-time."

According to Manpower in a recent employment survey major retailers expect to hire 22 percent more people this holiday season. Service industry employers are expecting to hire about 17 percent more.

Many retailers say now is the time to apply because they want to have hiring complete by mid to late October. They also say seasonal jobs can lead to full-time employment.

"This is a great way to get your foot in the door. A lot of our seasonal team members do come on full-time after the holiday season so it's a great way to see if they enjoy retail but also a way for us to see how great they are as a team member," said Law. claims people who smile a lot and have a positive attitude along with flexible schedules are the type of seasonal workers most people are looking for.

When looking for seasonal work, websites like say make sure to include your city and the word "seasonal" in your search.
