GREENSBORO, N.C. — Police temporarily closed West Friendly Ave. between Kemp Rd. and Jefferson Rd. Tuesday evening in response to an armed man threatening to harm himself inside his home.

Police say 33-year-old Brooks Gabriel Lancaster was safely taken into custody about six hours after police were called to his home at 4300 Friendly Ave. He was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

Police said they safely entered Lancaster’s home shortly before midnight after attempts to contact him via phone and loudspeaker were unsuccessful.

Police said LancasterĀ is believed to be suffering from a mental illness. They said concerned family members called them around 5:30 p.m.

No one else was inside Lancaster’s home and nobody was injured.

Residents in nearby houses were advised to shelter in place while police worked to resolve the situation.
