WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Winston-Salem police officers on Monday are wearing black bands across their badges to honor a fallen officer.

It’s to remember Patrol Officer Al Kinard, who died in the line of duty 52 years. The Honor Guard is also standing at the police memorial throughout the day.

Kinard was riding his motorcycle on East 4th Street when a car made a right turn in front of him, causing him to lose control and crash into a light pole.

Kinard’s death led to the police department’s mandate that motorcycle officers be required to wear helmets on duty.

Kinard was a 12-year veteran of the police department.
