SHELBY, N.C. — A North Carolina man was arrested after authorities said a 4-year-old child in his care was found with cocaine in his system.

The Gaston Gazette reported that Melvin Douglas Toms, 49, of Shelby, was charged Friday after a routine probationer home check.

Officials with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said they found cocaine and a child at his home during a search.

Deputies said they suspect the child either ingested or inhaled the drug, or was present during the cooking process of the cocaine to crack cocaine.

Officials said the child is not currently in the hospital. It remains uncertain how the child is connected to the suspect.

The suspect faces various charges including felonious child abuse, trafficking of cocaine, sell or delivery of a controlled substance to a minor and manufacture of cocaine.

Toms was placed in the Cleveland County Jail without bond and had court planned for Monday.
