FORT MILL, S.C. — A Fort Mill teacher died after she fell from a dock on Lake Wylie and hit a metal bar, according to WSOC-TV.

Charlotte police said 31-year-old Rebecca New died after the fall around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Officials said she somehow fell off a 17-foot boat dock and landed on some metal poles, cutting her neck, on Here at Last Lane in Charlotte.

Authorities said she was an art teacher at Gold Hill Elementary School.

“It is a very sad and shocking situation,” said Wayne Bouldin, a school board member, in a statement. “It is very sad anytime we lose one of our employees. All the employees in our district are one large family.”

Charlotte police said they’re trying to determine how she fell. They said there is no indication of foul play.

Teachers return to work at Gold Hill Elementary on Wednesday. Classes start Aug. 21. Grief counselors will be available.

Officials said New’s funeral services will likely take place in Conway where her family is from.
