ACWORTH, Ga. — A man who lost his wallet 24 years ago while waterskiing in North Carolina now has it back, thanks to a good Samaritan.

WSB-TV reported that Burton Maugans of Acworth, Ga. recently received a call from a stranger who knew his age, name and birthdate.

Maugans said he realized fairly quickly the stranger had found his wallet since it’s the only one he’d ever lost.

Maugans said he was 18 when he lost the wallet while waterskiing near Holden Beach.

“I forgot to take the wallet out of my pocket and I got in the water. As I got in, I realized it and I had already lost it,” Maugans said, according to WSB-TV.

North Carolina resident Jim Parker said he spotted the wallet while walking on the beach with his wife.

Parker tracked Maugans down online, called him and mailed him his old wallet, which he received on Thursday.

Maugans said the wallet is in decent condition, considering it spent 24 years lost somewhere near Holden Beach.

It still had old photo identification cards including his high school ID from 1987. The photos of his teenage self were well-preserved.

The Huffington Post reported that just hours before Maugans received the call from Parker, he received a fortune cookie with a message reading, “A small lucky package is on its way to you soon.”
