(WINSTON-SALEM JOURNAL) — Winston-Salem State University’s push to buy Bowman Gray Stadium was given tentative approval by the General Assembly on Wednesday afternoon.

The sale is included in the UNC Capital Improvement Projects, Senate Bill 480, which passed in the House by a vote of 95 to 25 and passed in the Senate with two dissenting votes.

State Reps. Ed Hanes, Donny Lambeth and Julia Howard of the Forsyth County delegation helped restore the stadium sale to the bill after it was removed last week by the Finance Committee.

The university is trying to buy the stadium and surrounding land from the city of Winston-Salem for $7.1 million. The university would use the land for future expansion, and would continue to play football games at the stadium. In addition, Winston-Salem Speedway Inc. would continue to conduct NASCAR races at the stadium.

A final vote is expected Thursday.
