INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — A North Carolina man is facing criminal charges after authorities said he illegally tattooed an underage girl, according to WSOC.

Matthew Joseph Hutchens, 18, of Indian Trail, is accused of tattooing a 17-year-old who paid him for a tattoo on her lower stomach.

Deputies said the suspect is neither licensed nor certified to give tattoos, and that tattooing anyone under the age of 18 is illegal.

Investigators are now warning about the possible health risks, saying the health department can’t regulate the sanitary conditions inside private homes.

The suspect was arrested after the underage girl’s father reported the incident. The father said his daughter’s blood is being tested to make sure her tattoo was safe.

The father also said the suspect may have tattooed other students at the nearby Sun Valley High School, a possibility authorities are now investigating.

WSOC went to the suspect’s home on Thursday, where he screamed and cursed at a camera crew from his bedroom window.

A woman who identified herself as Hutchens’ grandmother told WSOC that the suspect is a good and honest kid and a worker.
