GREENSBORO, N.C. — The health of former Guilford County Commissioner Billy Yow continues to improve after he was hospitalized in a well-drilling accident last week..

Officials said Yow was listed in fair condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem Thursday, though he is still in the ICU. He has been walking as part of his physical therapy regime, and has been talking with family and friends.

A piece of drilling equipment hit the 50-year-old in the head twice shortly before 5:45 p.m. June 20 when it came loose.

Yow was digging a water well in a woman’s front yard in Colfax at the time of the incident. He has owned D&Y Well Drilling, Inc. in Greensboro for nearly 30 years.
