SURRY COUNTY, N.C. — NC 89 between Low Gap and the Virginia line will be closed for blasting today and Friday, meaning motorists will have to take a 40-mile detour.

The road will be closed while crews work on blasting along the stretch of highway. The work is part of a project to straighten a sharp curve deemed dangerous by DOT officials.

The blasting was scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Thursday and end around 8 p.m. Friday.

According to the Mount Airy News, motorists heading west from Low Gap will be diverted east on NC 89 at I-77 North into Virginia. They will take Exit 14 onto U.S. 221/58 toward Galax and then head south on Hwy. 89 into North Carolina. Southbound traffic will use reverse directions along the same route.
