MOUNT AIRY, N.C.– An 11-year-old is in critical condition and three other people were sent to area hospitals with varying injuries as a result of a late-afternoon wreck in Mount Airy, The Mount Airy News reports.

Surry County Emergency Services Director John Shelton told the paper two pick-up trucks collided at the intersection of Bluemont Road and Andy Griffith Parkway shortly before 5:00 p.m.

He said an 11-year-old boy was flown to North Carolina Baptist Medical Center in critical condition and a female, age unknown, was sent to Baptist by ground transport. He said two other patients were transported to Northern Hospital of Surry County and a fifth person on the scene refused medical treatment.

Shelton said emergency workers had to close the “inside passing lane” in both the northbound and southbound sides of the parkway, limiting traffic to one lane each direction, while working the scene.

All of the people involved were riding in the passenger compartments of the pick-ups, he said. No other information was immediately available, and EMS and law enforcement officials were still at the scene shortly after 6 p.m.
