DANVILLE, Va. — Danville Councilman Fred O. Shanks III is facing charges related to domestic assault and battery following an incident on Tuesday involving his adult son.

Police responded to a domestic assault call around 11 p.m. Tuesday near West Main Street, according to Danville Police.

Upon arrival, officers determined the 22-year-old son of Shanks, 55, came to the home and asked for food.

“Because the son is banned from entering the home, the father agreed to feed the son while they sat on chairs in the back yard. The altercation occurred when the son attempted to enter the home after the meal,” Danville Police said in a press release.

Shanks was arrested and charged with domestic assault and battery and released on his own recognizance for arraignment on Monday.

According to the Danville Register & Bee, Shanks said on Wednesday night he regrets the incident.

“It is with deep sorrow that I allowed myself to be involved in this domestic matter involving my oldest son,” Shanks said. “I love him dearly and I’ve offered a great deal of support as he struggles with his personal issues. Over an extended period of time, the situation has created anguish for my wife, self and my entire family.”
