NC police officer involved in shooting

ZEBULON, N.C. — Authorities said a man who shot at a Zebulon police officer is in critical condition after the officer fired back.

WTVD reported that the shooting happened at the home in the 900 block of Moss Road around 6:15 a.m. Saturday.

Officials said 22-year-old Derek Smith fired at the officer, and then the officer opened fire hitting Smith.

Authorities said Smith was taken to WakeMed and is listed in critical condition.

The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting is under investigation.

The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative duty while the investigations are ongoing.

The name of the officer involved has been withheld pending further investigation.
