GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A 15-month-old boy whose body was found in a plastic bag along a North Carolina road in March was severely malnourished and died of neglect.

WTVD reported that the findings were part of an autopsy report on the death of Matthew Theurer released Friday.

Authorities said the boy’s body was found in March along a Columbus County road.

His father, also named Matthew Theurer, was arrested in March and charged with voluntary manslaughter, negligent homicide and murder.

The report also notes the boy had recently come to live with his father. The child would reportedly be left alone for 12 hours a day while his father worked as a senior airman at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
