China Grove man accused of murdering girlfriend

CHINA GROVE, N.C. — A China Grove man accused of murdering his girlfriend was arrested after authorities said they caught him hiding in the woods.

The Salisbury Post reported that Wayne Eugene Hill, 55, is accused of killing 48-year-old Roxanne Fowler Maddry.

Authorities said the victim was found murdered at the suspect’s home on Poplar Street around 7:45 p.m. Saturday.

The victim had been reported missing and China Grove police said they received a call to check on the welfare of a missing individual.

Police said the suspect was arrested around 8 a.m. Sunday after an all-night manhunt at the Stanly-Montgomery County line.

China Grove police said Hill wrecked his car around 10 p.m. on N.C. 24/27 at the Stanly-Montgomery County line and fled the scene.

He was reportedly taken to Stanly Memorial Hospital for self-inflicted injuries he sustained at some point.

Authorities said the victim died of blunt force trauma. The paper reported she was a mother of two and will be greatly missed in the community.

The suspect is in custody facing a murder warrant. Officials said he was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond and has court planned for Tuesday.
