WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Krispy Kreme is celebrating National Doughnut Day on Friday by offering a free doughnut of any variety to anyone who visits one of the chain’s stores.

According to the company, anyone who stops in at any Krispy Kreme store across the U.S. or Canada can select a free doughnut of their choice — no purchase necessary.

National Doughnut Day was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 as a way to raise funds for those in need during the depression.  It has since been observed each year on the first Friday of June.
