LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A North Carolina man was arrested after being accused of using his van to drag a donkey down a paved road.

WBTV reported that Richard Ricky Hudson, 68, of Vale, was charged with misdemeanor conveying animals in a cruel manner in the incident.

Lincoln County deputies said they were called to the area of the Ward Road/Plateau Road intersection in northwestern Lincoln County around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Neighbors said a man was driving a van pulling a donkey. Authorities said the animal was dragged for nearly a half-mile.

Deputies said the donkey was tethered by a rope to the trailer hitch on the van. They said the animal’s legs and rear portion had scrapes and bleeding.

Authorities said they contacted Animal Services and the donkey was placed in a shelter.

Officials said they suspect was released on a $4,000 secured bond and has court planned for June 7.
