GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford Technical Community College is hosting an open house Thursday night to show off their Aviation Center and discuss career opportunities in aviation.

GTCC offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree in four areas of study:  Aviation Electronics (Avionics) Technology, Aviation Management, Career Pilot Technology and Aviation Systems Technology.

The college also offers certificates in five areas of study under the Aviation Management/Career Pilot Technology and Aviation Systems Technology programs.

"You can see there's going to be a shortage of certified mechanics to work on aircraft in the future," GTCC Professor Howard Barber said.  "So we're working hard to keep things going and make sure there's enough people to keep airplanes safe for people to fly on."

Students like Jacob Kitchen say the program is perfect for hands-on learners.

"All the kids I graduated high school with still have another year of college left, and I'm done this year," Kitchen said.  "I'll be 21 and in my career path -- not just some dead-end job."

GTCC's aviation program has doubled in size in recent years.  Many students, including Kitchen, who are graduating this July have already obtained jobs.

Thursday's open house will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.  It will be at GTCC's Davis Aviation Center at 260 North Regional Road in addition to the Aviation II building at 819 Radar Road -- both in Greensboro.
