FLAT ROCK, N.C. — Authorities are investigating after they said human remains were found in the Flat Rock community of Surry County.

Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson said various law enforcement agencies were on the scene Sunday after part of a human skull was found Friday night.

Atkinson said the remains were found by a resident strolling through the woods who later contacted law enforcement.

The remains are described as the upper part of a human skull, with the lower jaw missing.

Authorities said they currently cannot identify the remains. They said the skull will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine whether DNA can be extracted.

Atkinson said the skull appears to have been exposed to weather for an extended period of time.

He said they plan to continue searching for remains. The investigation is ongoing.
