Athletics Director Ron Wellman of Wake Forest removed any doubt about the immediate future of Jeff Bzdelik Tuesday, saying that Bzdelik will return for a fourth season head basketball coach, the Winston-Salem Journal is reporting.

He said that Bzdelik, whose Deacons were 13-18 and 6-13 against ACC competition, will remain under his existing contract.

“He still has multiple years on his contract,’’ Wellman said, declining to reveal how many.

Bzdelik, who is 34-60 overall and 11-42 against conference competition at Wake Forest, came under intense fire from a mobilized fan base by the end of the season. The Deacons lost 10 of their final 13 games, finished 0-9 in ACC road games and were eliminated in the first round of the ACC Tournament for the third straight year.

Wellman cited progress in home victories over Miami, N.C. State, Virginia and Xavier and the experience gained by a freshman class that played more than 60 percent of the Deacons’ minutes.
