Guilford County picks next manager

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County commissioners decided early Friday on who to hire to be the next county manager.

Chairman Linda Shaw says commissioners, in a 6-3 vote, chose to hire Marty Lawing, who has been serving as manager of the coastal Brunswick County.

Lawing will be given a base pay of $183,000.

He begins May 6.

Prior to working for Brunswick County, he was the City Administrator of Conway, S.C., City Administrator in Bennettsville, S.C. and served in a similar capacity in Bishopville, S.C.

Lawing holds a B.A. in Political Science with a concentration in Public Management from Appalachian State University.  He also holds a Master’s in Political Science from ASU.  He is a member of the International City/County Management Association and the N.C. City/County Management Association.
