Two hit, killed by train near Monroe Road in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities said two women were hit and killed by a train in southeast Charlotte on Sunday morning.

WSOC reported that is happened just after 3:30 a.m. on Monroe Road at Village Lake Drive. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Officials said the train was traveling roughly 30 miles per hour and was hauling more than 100 cars at a weight of more than 10,000 tons.

Police said the engineer of the train told them he saw a person sleeping on the tracks. They said  the engineer could not stop in time.

Police said that neither female had any type of identification on them. Investigators said they both appeared to be between 20 and 30 years old.
