IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. – An Iredell County teacher accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death was released Thursday on bond set at $200,000.

WCNC reported that 42-year-old Dawn Bridget Kavanaugh is accused of stabbing and killing Ronald Ketchum on Feb. 10. Kavanaugh claims it was self-defense.

Her attorneys have argued that her lack of criminal record and ties to the community should give her a chance to get out of jail.

Kavanaugh taught sixth-grade social studies at Lakeshore Middle School and recently received the “Teacher of the Year” award.

Kavanaugh has been with the school district since 2004 when she started at South Iredell High School. She has taught sixth grade social studies since 2010.

A motive for the alleged incident has not been released.
