LONDON — A 62-year-old British man who became a internet star after video of him wrestling a shark on an Australian beach went viral was fired after his employer discovered he was traveling abroad while on sick leave.

Paul Marshallsea was filmed pulling a six-foot-long shark away from people at Caloundra beach near Brisbane in January. However, the incident was captured on video and posted online.

His employer the Pant and Dowlais Boys & Girls Club, a Welsh charity, saw the video. The charity claims Marshallsea had been on leave since April after saying he was suffering from work-related stress.

Marshallsea told WalesOnline he was unhappy about how he was treated, adding his doctor recommended he take a vacation.

The charity has not commented.
