HIGH POINT, N.C. — Police said a man was injured after he drove off the road and hit a tree Wednesday night in High Point.

Authorities said Jeffrey Dean Barfield, 47, of High Point, drove a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban off the roadway and into the drainage ditch in the 400 block of Ennis Street around 7:30 p.m.

Police said Barfield then hit a tree and was partially ejected out the driver side front window. He then collided with a utility pole before stopping, authorities said.

Police said he was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and is in critical condition.

They said there was no excessive speed associated with the single-vehicle crash.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and no charges are currently expected.
