DOBSON, N.C. — The Special Olympics of Surry County plans to host a Polar Plunge fundraiser Saturday afternoon in Dobson.

The Mount Airy News reported that the event is planned to start at 1 p.m. at Fisher River Park on County Home Road.

Participants will submerge themselves in frigid waters. Shannon Lewis helped organize the event and said the weather will not be too cold.

“It’s something different for our area…there are lots of raffles, but we wanted something unique. We really hope to have a good turnout,” Lewis said, according to the paper.

The paper reported that the fundraiser will benefit Special Olympic athletes in the area, helping to fund equipment, uniforms, transportation and travel expenses.
