WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Sears Holdings Corp. will close its Kmart store on Peters Creek Parkway in mid-March, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

The store’s 69 employees were told of the closing Monday, according to Chris Brathwaite, a spokesman for Sears Holdings.

The store opened in 1978. Officials said the business will start liquidation sales Jan. 13. The Kmart location in Clemmons will remain open.

The majority of the employees at the Kmart at 2690 Peters Creek Parkway work part time/hourly, Brathwaite said. Eligible employees will receive severance and be able to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores.

“The decision to close a store is not one we take lightly, because Kmart appreciates being a member of the community,” Brathwaite said in an email interview. “However, we made a business decision to close this location.”
